In early 2005, the Queensland Government announced approval and funding for the Gateway Upgrade Project. The project includes duplication of the Gateway Bridge and upgrading of 20 kilometres of the Gateway Motorway including the construction of a new Gateway Deviation and enhanced access to Brisbane Airport.
The $1.88 billion upgrade is the largest road and bridge infrastructure project in Queensland’s history. The upgrade will not only ensure more efficient and safer travel for Queenslanders but also provide vital infrastructure for the continued growth of the Australia TradeCoast region, comprising of the Port of Brisbane, Brisbane Airport and surrounding industrial and commercial precincts.
Queensland Motorways will deliver the Gateway Upgrade Project on behalf of the State Government. Delivery and operation of the Gateway Upgrade Project was added to Queensland Motorways’ areas of responsibility with the signing of a new 30 year franchise agreement in 2006. Following a rigorous tender process, Queensland Motorways awarded the contract to design, construct and maintain the Gateway Upgrade Project to the Leighton Abigroup Joint Venture.
Construction of the Gateway Upgrade Project began in late 2006 with the start of early works on the Wynnum Road Upgrade. The project will be completed in mid 2011.
